This is arguably one of the most important essays in Open Mystic. We can get to essential core meanings by investigating the question: Why so many religious and spiritual traditions? Let's start with the basic concept and work our way up - beginning at a lower level "Chakra". Everyone is familiar with the concept of sex and is generally aware of the endless variations of sexual practices. A core life function - reproduction - has pinballed through a long term quasi-infinite array of human character traits, cultural mores, and socialized beliefs such that a basic drive vibrantly blossoms into broadly variegated practices depending on who, where, when, and how. It's likely the same way with religion and spirituality where a core meta-drive (the "formless deity"?) pinballs through the same quasi-infinite array of human character traits, cultural mores, and socialized beliefs to blossom into highly variegated practices and beliefs ("forms") depending on who, where, when, and how! Chances are in fact that all accumulated human knowledge derives its origin from the core meta-drive pinballing its way through the afore mentioned long term human array where it takes on - once again - endlessly variegated forms. Any one type or level of knowledge can all be taken as a pointer back to the "core meta-drive". The broader the range of knowledge from which pointers are derived, then the clearer the understanding of that essential meta-drive. So in this light, the true spiritual practitioner needs to look through the broadest possible range of knowledge and try to hunt for elements that widely diverse knowledge areas have in common. It is the elements in common that offer clues to the core meta-drive. A person trying to attain the largest possible "temporal aperture" that they can manage will surely stumble on those markers in common eventually as a critical temporal aperture size is attained. It is at that critical knowledge mass where the seeker finally apprehends the core meta-drive after considering a large enough array of diverse pointers. This is truly a hunt and is thus archetypal behavior. |
